The Pulpit - Teaching of Jesus 1
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Beside the war memorial is a Pulpit which was moved here from the front of the Nave during the 2020 Renewal. This and earlier pulpits have had four different positions in the church. This Pulpit was given in 1920 in memory of John Veysey, Vicar from 1878-1916, and moved here a hundred later.
Anecdote
In Georgian times there was a three-tiered Pulpit positioned by the front, north pillar of the Nave. The lowest tier was for the parish clerk to lead congregational responses and make announcements. The middle tier was for the minister to read lessons and scripture. The top, highest tier was for the minister to deliver the sermon. When this Pulpit was removed as part of the 1872 restoration a new pulpit was placed at the front of the south aisle of the Nave. The existing Pulpit replaced this in about 2020 and was positioned at the front of the Nave just to the left (north) of where the Eagle Lectern now stands. As, with the introduction of amplified sound, it had fallen into disuse, it was moved to its current position during the 2020 Renewal.
