Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information Waymarker collects, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We keep it short and plain, and we never sell your data.
Last updated August 2026.
Who we are
Waymarker provides self-guided audio and visual tours of historic churches and heritage sites. For the information described here, Waymarker is the data controller. If you subscribe to a church or give to it, that church is also a controller of its own records.
What we collect
If you are a visitor
- Your email address, when you subscribe to a venue, make a donation, or ask for a sign-in link.
- Your name and any message, if you choose to add them when subscribing or giving.
- A record of your subscriptions and donations, so you and the church can see them, and so we can send receipts.
If you look after a venue
- Your account details, such as your name and email, and the venue information you enter.
- The content you upload, including audio, photographs and text for your tour.
Everyone
- Basic technical information needed to run a website safely, such as your browser type and the pages you visit, kept to a minimum.
We do not see or store your card details. Card payments are handled by Stripe, our payment provider, on their secure systems.
How we use your information
- To provide the service: showing tours, sending sign-in links, and recording subscriptions and donations.
- To send the news and updates you have asked for from a venue, until you unsubscribe.
- To send service messages such as donation receipts and confirmations.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and meet our legal obligations.
Our legal bases
We rely on your consent for venue news and updates, which you give through our double opt-in and can withdraw at any time. We rely on performing a contract or our legitimate interests to run and protect the service, and on legal obligation where the law requires it.
Who we share it with
We share your information only where it is needed to provide the service:
- The church you subscribe to or give to. They receive the details of your subscription or donation so they can thank you and keep their records.
- Stripe, to process payments securely.
- Our email and hosting providers, who help us deliver messages and run the service.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for other companies' advertising.
Cookies and sessions
We use a small number of essential cookies to keep the site working and to remember you when you sign in. We do not use them to track you around the web.
How long we keep it
We keep subscription records until you unsubscribe, and donation records for as long as needed for accounting and tax. We keep account information for as long as your venue is listed. When information is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.
Your rights
You can ask us to give you a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete it. You can unsubscribe from any venue at any time using the link in any email or from your account. You can also object to certain uses, and ask us to limit how we use your information. To exercise any of these, email us at [email protected].
If you are in the UK or the EU and you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to your data protection regulator. In the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office.
Children
Waymarker is intended for general audiences and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us information, please contact us and we will remove it.
Keeping it safe
We take sensible steps to protect your information, including encrypting sensitive details and limiting who can see them. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep yours safe.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make an important change, we will take reasonable steps to let you know.
